According to Wikipedia, Pope Benedict has been a supporter of the Catholic charismatic renewal. That's a pleasant surprise, from my perspective.

Actually, Pope Benedict is a big supporter of many of the lay ecclesial movements. (For example, when Fr. Giussani of Communion and Liberation died, he came to celebrate the funeral mass.) I think he sees their energy and vitality and desire to live the faith fully as part of the way the Church will be revitalized. He often speaks of the need for small "creative communities" living the faith attractively for evangelism to be successful.
