It took a week and a half for this?
I hate to say it but doesn't this usually indicate that the motivation is not personal conviction but political exigencies? As in, gee, my papacy is falling apart, my own home country is seething with anger toward me, guess I'd better do something convincing (and plead ignorance to boot)?
Granted, I'm looking at this through the lens of the popular media, which usually gets things wrong in fairly significant ways. On the other hand it's quite obvious he's in trouble, no matter who you listen to.
