Liturgy and Feasts: April 2009 Archives

In some quarters it has become fashionable to call the chief priest at a Mass the "presider", rather than the "celebrant". This is usually prompted by people who want to make our language all accessible and touchy-feely and so forth. But let's be honest: Would you, or even a touchy-feely New Age kind of guy, rather have a "presider", or a "celebrant"? Put another way, would you rather look at the Mass as a presidency or as a celebration? Which is more New Agey now?

Being more touchy-feely than some of my friends, and especially having grown up that way, I always thought it was way cool that we called a Mass a "celebration". You couldn't pick a better marketing word, in my opinion. Yay! Woo-hoo! We're celebrating! Awesome! Why would anyone want to take that away from us?
